Probe placement and wiring
The position of the probe and the installation settings decide if the readings are correct. A WiFi connection is not sufficient. The general rules are below. The details for each product are on its page, in the device catalogue.
| Device | Power |
|---|---|
| Most sensors | With the 5 V micro-USB adapter in the box, or from terminals, where the model has them. |
| DIN rail devices | From the electrical panel. |
| HAM LightSwitch and HAM Plug | From the 230 VAC / 50 Hz mains. |
The HAM LightSwitch controls a load of up to 2 A, about 460 W at 230 VAC.
The output of the HAM DinSwitch and the HAM DinSwitchM can carry up to 5 A at 230 VAC.
For larger loads, for example a water heater or a motor, install a DIN rail power relay after the device. The shop sells the devices also with a 25 A or a 40 A DIN rail relay. Do not improvise another solution on site.
- The device output supplies the coil of the relay.
- The load connects to the power contacts of the relay.
Energy metering
Section titled “Energy metering”-
Put the current transformer (CT, clamp) around the conductor that you want to measure.
-
Check which CT you installed. The single-phase CT that comes with the metering versions is 1:1000, for up to 80 A.
-
After the device connects, open its settings in the app.
-
Set the CT Ratio setting to match the CT that you installed.
Steps 2 to 4 apply to the HAM DinSwitch and the HAM DinSwitchM. The HAM DinMeter3P has no CT Ratio setting. HAM calibrates it in the factory with its CTs. Use it only with the CTs it came with.
The HAM DinMeter3P three-phase meter warns you in the app about CT errors:
- Phase … CT is probably reversed, consider switching polarity: the app tells you which phase. Turn the CT of that phase the other way round.
- Phase CTs probably do not match: check that all CTs are the same and that each CT is on the correct phase.
These warnings show an installation error. The device has no fault.
Check before you turn on the power
Section titled “Check before you turn on the power”For DIN rail devices, check these items before you turn on the supply:
- The circuit breaker stays off while you work.
- Line (L) and neutral (N) are on the correct terminals, as the device page shows.
- Each CT has side K (or S1) toward the supply and side L (or S2) toward the load.
- With a power relay: the device output goes to the relay coil and the load to the power contacts.
- The router is not on a circuit that a HAM device controls.
Wiring for each device
Section titled “Wiring for each device”The terminals and the wiring of each device are on its page:
- HAM DinSwitch
- HAM DinSwitchM
- HAM DinMeter3P
- HAM DinMeterDC
- GPS trackers
- GPS with OBD-II
- GPS with temperature
- Install a GPS tracker in a vehicle
Temperature probes
Section titled “Temperature probes”- Put the probe where the temperature matters: inside the fridge, inside the product or in the probe pocket (thermowell).
- Do not let the probe hang in the air near the door. The draught from the door gives wrong readings.
- You can extend the probe cable by several metres.
For readings that you must document, use the Calibration table in the Advanced settings of the device. This is a correction on site. It does not replace a calibration certificate from a laboratory.
Level probes
Section titled “Level probes”Ultrasonic sensor (HAM SonicSense): the sensor measures from 250 to 7500 mm.
- Below 250 mm, the sensor does not measure correctly and the tank always looks full. Install it so that the liquid always stays more than 250 mm away.
- Check that the beam below the sensor is clear. Ladders, inlet pipes and foam give wrong readings.
Hydrostatic sensor (HAM DepthSenseS): the density setting converts the pressure to a level. Set the density of the liquid that you measure. With a wrong density, the level is always wrong.
Modbus and pulse inputs
Section titled “Modbus and pulse inputs”Some settings say Set according to your energy metering device or Set according to your water metering device. You get these values from the technical data of the other equipment: the energy meter, the water meter or the pipe. HAM support cannot know these values. See Modbus devices.
WiFi signal
Section titled “WiFi signal”Check the signal at the point where the device will stay. Inside a metal panel or inside a fridge, the signal is weaker. After you install the device, open its page and look at the Signal Strength. See Before you install.
Check before you leave
Section titled “Check before you leave”- The device is online and the readings make sense. For example, 85 °C on a fridge probe shows that the probe is not in the correct position.
- The installation settings are correct: CT Ratio (not on the HAM DinMeter3P), pulses, pipe diameter, sensor range, density.
- The device has a name that the customer recognises. See Device settings.
- There is at least one rule for values out of range and one for loss of connection. See Your first alert.
- You tested the alert and it reaches the correct people. See Push, e-mail, SMS, call.
- The device is on the account of the customer. Other users have access through sharing.
- The customer has the label with the Device key.
Frequent mistakes
Section titled “Frequent mistakes”- The device received the details of a 5 GHz network. The device does not see 5 GHz networks.
- The setup was done at the office and the device was installed at a point without signal.
- The CT Ratio stayed at the default value after a different CT was installed.
- The probe measures the air and not the product.
- The installer claimed the device on their own account and not on the account of the customer. See Move a device to another place or account.
- The rules and alerts were left for later.
